Il est grand temps de vous présenter mon Gérard, voilà déjà quelques semaines qu’il ne me quitte plus :)

Cette histoire a commencé il y a plus d’un an, lorsqu’à l’automne 2013 j’ai cherché un patron de manteau « boyfriend ». Comme je n’ai pas trouvé exactement ce qui me convenait, je me suis rabattue sur ce patron de veste, qui avait l’avantage d’être gratuit …. Le résultat ici ne me satisfait qu’à moitié, j’ai fait quelques erreurs par manque de connaissances. Et voilà que seulement quelques jours plus tard, Gérard apparaît sur le site de RDC ! Le voilà enfin le patron parfait !

Cette année donc, après avoir salivé devant toutes ces versions, je suis plus que prête à coudre enfin mon Gérard. Le patron est acheté et recopié bien consciencieusement dès la fin du mois de septembre… J’ai même trouvé le tissu en août, un magnifique drap de cachemire réversible : un côté tout doux en cachemire noire et un côté en flanelle grise. Gérard vaut bien cet investissement, il faut qu’il soit bien chaud ! Pour la doublure j’ai choisi un satin de polyester rose pour quand même féminiser un peu mon manteau.

J’ai pris mon temps pour découper et thermocoller les pièces précisément, comme conseillé par Géraldine. J’ai ensuite suivi les explications de montage en m’appuyant sur le pas à pas de la veste Michelle. Ma nouvelle machine m’a bien aidée, son pied de biche avec guide m’a permis de coudre sur les poches des surpiqûres bien parallèles ainsi qu’un point décoratif pour solidifier le haut. Et j’ai découvert les boutonnières automatiques, ça change la vie.

Il manquait quand même à Gérard des poches qui se ferment, pour promener en sécurité tout un tas de petites choses (oui oui, mouchoirs, labello, tickets de métro qu’il faut tenir éloignés du téléphone sinon ils se démagnétisent … si si, j’ai bien un sac à main, mais bon, je suis une fille ;) ). J’ai donc ajouté 2 poches passepoilées dans la doublure, fermées par un ruban de satin.

Petit parenthèse sur les boutons : je les ai choisis en métal, et j’ai toujours le même problème avec ces boutons. Très rapidement le trou qui sert à les coudre scie le fil et je passe mon temps à les recoudre. Si il existe une technique, un fil special ou si quelqu’un a une solution miracle j’aimerais beaucoup la connaître !

Malgré ce petit détail, Gérard est parfait ! J’adore me glisser à l’intérieur, de préférence avec un slim noir et un sac un peu plus habillé pour équilibrer son côté masculin.

It´s really time you meet my Gerard coat ! I’ve been wearing it all the time for many weeks now.

My love story with Gerad began last fall, as I was desperately looking for a perfect boyfriend coat pattern. Nothing was exactly what I was looking for, but I had to make a choice before weather became too cold. I choose this free pattern. I liked the style but my version was not perfect and I was not sure if I liked it or not. That’s when République Du Chiffon released Gérard pattern ! I should have waited a few days before I made the first coat ! I hesitated to sew it right away but had no time.

That’s why I was so ready to sew it last October, especially after having seen all those versions ! I bought the perfect fabric back in August and the pattern by the end of September, waiting for the first signs of cool weather to start sewing it. The main fabric is black cashmere on one side and grey fleece on the other. Soft and warm at the same time, just because Gerard deserves it. I choose pink satin for the lining, for it to be more feminine.

I found it rather easy to sew. It took me a lot of time to precisely trace the pattern, cut the fabric and interface all the pieces that are required to. Once this was done, I followed the pattern instructions with the help of Michelle jacket sew-along. My new machine was also a great help to regularly topstitch the pockets and to add a decorative stitch to secure the upper part. And automatic buttonholes are just ….magic !

To my mind, the only little thing that was missing to Gérard was pockets I would be able to close. I always carry a lot of girly stuff in my pockets in addition to my purse. I thus decided to add two welt pockets on the lining, with a thin black satin ribbon to close them.

In the end I just find my Gerard is perfect ! It’s so comfy I love wearing it, especially with a pair of black skinny pants and a lady purse to balance it’s boyfriend style.

I just encounter the same thread problem as each time I use metal buttons : the metallic eye used to sew it to the garment inevitably cut my thread after only a few days of use. If somedy knows a solution to avoid this, or if there is a special resistant thread to use I would be really glad to know it !
